They say there’s no such thing as a free lunch, but cook Thomasina Miers and writer and adventurer Guy Grieve don’t agree. They believe that the British countryside isn’t just picturesque, it’s a rich larder just waiting to be unlocked, and in a bid to prove that Britain’s wild food is better than any supermarket or Michelin starred restaurant, Tommi and Guy will travel across the UK demonstrating how to hunt, catch and forage for their supper. They are determined to prove that foraging isn’t just about eating grubs and stinging nettles. Tommi wants to create aspirational feasts from the freshest and wildest seasonal produce the countryside has to offer.
Guy has survived for 11.5 months in the wilds of Alaska and knows how to eat to live. Tommi lives to eat. A former Masterchef winner, Tommi is a vociferous champion of local and seasonal food. They share a huge love and respect for the countryside, both have skills in hunting and gathering, and together they hope they can rustle up meals to die for.
Each week our wild gourmets will travel to a different region in search of seasonal culinary prizes, from grouse in Yorkshire, wild mushrooms in Wales, freshwater fish in Suffolk, and the biggest prize of all – deer in the remote Scottish Highlands. Tommi will conjure up salads of wild sorrel and hairy bittercress, chestnut soups, game casseroles, pickled eels, wild mushroom fritattas and even attempt to persuade us that grey squirrel is a culinary delicacy.
Consumers are increasingly eager to know where their food comes from and how it has been prepared. Foraging is common practice on the Continent but the British have not traditionally followed their Gallic neighbours’ example. The Wild Gourmets provides a fascinating insight in to the hidden gastronomic treasures of our rivers, valleys, mountains and hedgerows and will inspire viewers to create mouth watering recipes from a surprising selection of ingredients.
