1 x 60′, Channel 4
This documentary follows academic Dr Noreena Hertz as she embarks upon an ambitious and provocative campaign to get all 556 Premiership footballers to donate a day’s wage to Nurses on the final weekend of the season May 13th.
According to Dr Hertz “Nursing is in crisis, nearly three-quarters of newly-qualified nurses can’t get a job, and over a quarter of nurses who are working have to take on extra jobs to make ends meet. Despite the billions that have been spent on the NHS, nurses are still the lowest paid public sector professionals, earning far less than teachers and tube drivers, despite the life-saving work that they do”
Having worked on Third World debt issues alongside Sir Bob Geldof and Bono, Noreena knows a thing or two about campaigning. However she knows absolutely nothing and no-one in the world of football. So not only does she have to find a way of breaking into this notoriously secretive and elusive group, but she then has to persuade them that her cause is worthy of their support and ultimately their cash.
With the deadline of May 13th fast approaching she must draw upon all her networking skills if she is to have any chance of meeting with some of the biggest names in football, from Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs to big Sam Allardyce and the man himself Sir Alex Ferguson.
If she’s successful then Dr Noreena Hertz may be able to effect real change for the hundreds and thousands of nurses who provide such an indispensable service to us all. But if she doesn’t, then what does that say about society’s moral values today?
