Grow Your Own Drugs

6×30’ for BBC2

Whether you’ve got acne, eczema, insomnia, nits or dandruff, this series could help ease your aches and pains.

James Wong is an ethnobotanist studying how we’ve used plants in cooking and medicine for thousands of years. With his expert botanical knowledge he can show you how to make skin creams, cough sweets, bath bombs and bandages from the plants growing in your window box, your herbaceous border or just wild in the great outdoors.

Grow Your Own Drugs combines health, gardening, cooking and stunning landscapes. It’s a series that will show you how to make simple remedies from familiar plants to sooth common ailments or provide natural alternatives to your existing beauty products.

Since childhood growing up in Malaysia, when his grandmother taught him how to make traditional remedies, James has been fascinated by plants and how we use them. He believes there’s an alternative to many over the counter drugs, and they’re growing in your average back garden.

James will show us how to grow and harvest plants and create treatments for a wide range of common ailments. In each episode he will meet people with a variety of health problems, from an eczema-ridden teenager, to the rugby team who are always covered in bruises or a new mum with varicose veins.

Showcasing the picturesque British countryside and stunning plants, Grow Your Own Drugs is an information packed, empowering insight in to the medicinal power of plants. You’ll never look at your back garden in the same way again.
