Death in Santaland

1 x 60′

For his latest adventure, writer Jon Ronson travels to the North Pole. Not the geographic North Pole but North Pole Alaska, a small town with a population 0f 1,659. Its claim to fame is to be the location of Santa Claus’s House and the place where each year thousands of letters addressed to Santa arrive and are handled by a small army of Santa’s helpers. It is a town dedicated to the celebration of Christmas and the business it brings. But when Jon arrives and starts to tour of the town a problem comes to light – Santa is missing.
The man who had been employed to take on the persona of Santa – even to the point of changing his name to Kris Kringle – has, either gone on holiday or mysteriously died, depending on who Jon speaks to. In any event he’s vanished and Jon sniffs a conspiracy. The more he probes, the stranger it gets. Town officials eventually come clean that seventh graders at the Middle School who were enlisted to answer Santa’s letters have been planning a Colombine style massacre of teachers and fellow pupils. The plot has been exposed and 15 pupils arrested. The town that has at its heart the Christmas dream is facing in reality a nightmare.
